出石乙女 | Izushiotome
The wisteria flower as a motif has a long history in Japan, and a lot of Japanese kamon (family crests) and surnames include the wisteria character.
Izushiotome was a kind hearted goddess from the Kojiki, one of Japan’s ancient texts, and she was said to have been won over by her suitor’s garment that turned into wisteria flowers. She is still worshipped at Mizushi Shrine in Hyōgo Prefecture.
When I was born, my parents planted a wisteria tree for me. I was very sick as a baby, and my Mum likes to say that the wisteria gave me its life force - the wisteria tree didn't survive, but I did.
